Spermatozoa Cryopreservation

SEREMAS has the methodology to cryopreserve spermatozoa obtained from different sites: semen, epididymis, testicular tissue, urine and electrostimulation.

One of the reasons to cryopreserve a sperm sample appears when the man will need chemotherapy because of cancer. In these cases, 1-3 samples are cryopreserved BEFORE starting the treatment, in order to preserve the patient’s future fertility, since almost 100% of these men will become azoospermic after this kind of procedure.

Another indication for semen cryopreservation is the case of men who have difficulty in obtaining the sample and, in this way before intrauterine insemination treatment, IVF or ICSI (depending on the case); we assure the availability of a cryopreserved sample in case the day of the procedure the man might not get it.

In the cases of azoospermic men, whereas they are obstructive or non-obstructive, whenever a testicular biopsy or epididymis punction is performed, retrieved spermatozoa are cryopreserved. Therefore, we will later on stimulate ovulation knowing that we already count on the man’s gametes. This becomes especially relevant in non-obstructive azoospermic men among whom there are approximately a 50% of cases where spermatozoa will actually be found and therefore cryopreserved.
